New Impacts on Mars

This image from the Mars Global Surveyor shows the same spot on the Mars surface from the year 2001 above and 2006 below. Obviously there has been a meteorite impact. It will be interesting in future years to image this same spot and to see if there is any fading of the dark sediments that were showered onto the surface. That part of Mars has many many older craters that are nearly completely eroded over time and are covered by a thin layer of dust.
